Blotting-Out the Future

Updated: Oct 4, 2019

The development of modern weapons of mass destruction has opened up some terrible possibilities. Never before in the history of humankind has such power been in the hands of human beings. The result is that many people have been forced to think about the future of our species and the planet on which we live. It has influenced the human psyche, causing many to put their heads in the sand, and to fall into a postmodern stupor of consumerism, which denies the reality of the world as it is. Reality is replaced with the hyper-reality of consumer culture. Thus people live in the ‘now’ preferring to blot-out the future and any consequences that may come. ‘Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die’ is the slogan for those dwelling in this world of hype-reality. It’s an old slogan but a very current one.
