A Digital Age

Updated: Jul 31, 2019

We live in a digital age, which, in part, means that we can see history happening almost instantaneously on our digital devices. Thus not only can we see history happening, but we can make history happen differently if we decide to act and engage at that moment in time. It is somewhat scary in that life is instantaneous, and history happens before our eyes. Movements like, the Arab Spring Movement, the Brexit Movement, the MeToo Movement, and the Yellow Vest Movement have all been facilitated through the use of digital media and have changed or are changing the course of history in a variety of ways for good or bad.

The implications of digital technology also impact our personal lives in that we are called upon or pressurised to make quick decisions without significant periods of deliberation. In dealing with minor problems this may be acceptable, but concerning the more critical issues of life, it is far more daunting. Consequently, we need to have the strength to step back and create space for ourselves so that we can take a reasonable amount of time in order to make wise decisions. Perhaps, if our politicians also did this, our country and the world would be a healthier place.
