If we, as the people of God, are to develop a credible spirituality for mission we must learn how to love our neighbour as we love ourselves. Loving our neighbour is not something we tag on to mission it is nothing less than a fundament constituent of God’s kingdom that the church seeks to extend as it participates in God’s mission to the world. Love is at the very heart of who God is; therefore, it must be front and centre of the church's mission in and for the world as it walks in loving obedience to God’s commands. Jesus over and over again taught his disciples that loving self-denial and humble service was at the heart of his mission that culminates in the cross, which was the ultimate act of love and self-sacrifice. Thus, spending ourselves in the service of others is a crucial dimension of missionary spirituality. It does mean becoming a doormat, but it does mean seriously imitating Jesus as our model for mission.
