The gospel is empty, if history carries no meaning, if the universe ends in a catastrophic black hole, or if it fades away slowly running out of energy. Without a biblical eschatology, there is no Christian hope. Our hope rests upon the reality that the future is in the hands of God. That is the great gift of Easter, which gives us confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and his goodness and love, which nothing can shake. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the beginning of God’s new creation project, which is consummated in the new heaven and new earth. All this is made possible for us in and through Jesus Christ. Thus, we are invited to participate in the new creation and enjoy the life of heaven in the new earth. Not only there will be no more death, but life will be what it was always intended to be.
