Today we engage in mission in the light of a seismic shift in the centre of world Christianity. Andrew Walls has described it as a “massive southward shift of the centre of gravity of the Christian world.” The church in the West is in decline, and the dynamism of the church now resides in the southern hemisphere among the churches of Africa, Asia and Latin America, which is the new worldwide centre of Christianity. This means that Western church must be willing to take on a servant role and exhibit greater humility in the way we engage in mission. In doing so, we must move beyond our colonial past and take on the role of learners as we work alongside and at times under our brothers and sisters from the Majority world.
