Humility

Les Henson

In the Scriptures, humility embodies the heartfelt attitude of a sinner who recognises their complete dependence on God's boundless grace and mercy. It is a response that fully embraces the richness of God's love, a love that actively seeks out the lost and broken. This love is powerfully expressed in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, our bridge to God. Through His life, death, and resurrection, we find reconciliation with the Father, drawing us into an intimate relationship that nourishes our spirit and transforms our lives.

Living humbly means moving through each day continually, aware of our reliance on God. True humility is not passive; it stands boldly and courageously before the realities of our existence. It acknowledges our failings while refusing to succumb to despair, inviting us to place unwavering trust in God amid our struggles with sin.

The Scriptures remind us of this profound truth: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" (1 Peter 5:5; James 4:6). This powerful principle reveals God's heart—actively resisting arrogance while generously pouring grace on those who approach Him with humility. His grace is a free and unmerited gift, received when we embrace our brokenness and deep need for Him.

In our spiritual journey, we are called to "walk humbly" with our God, as highlighted in Micah 6:8. This call invites us to lead lives marked by humility, recognising our limitations while trusting deeply in the God who lifts us from despair and fills us with courage.

True humility embodies strength under control, recognising that our strength does not come from ourselves but from our identity in Christ. This identity empowers us to rise above our circumstances, navigating life's challenges with grace and resilience. In this light, humility becomes a dynamic source of strength, reminding us that we are not defined by our failures but by the love and forgiveness found in Christ. By embracing humility, we cultivate a deep trust in God, knowing that even in our darkest moments, His mercy envelops us. Thus, humility inspires hope, healing, and a purposeful, empowered life.
