Faith Not Certainty

Les Henson

Faith is not the same as certainty. Faith must always leave room for genuine doubt. Robert Breault says, “What is certainty but the refuge of those whose faith is not strong enough to entertain doubt.” For doubt, when struggled with and reflected upon in the presence of God, leads to fuller understanding rather than unbelief. Even when doubt does not lead to greater understanding, faith recognises that there may be a time when the scales will be removed from our eyes, and we will see more clearly. Yet, faith is not akin to certainty but to hope. It is the things hoped for but as yet unseen. Faith looks forward with expectancy that God will accomplish what he promised regardless of the opposition or obstacles in his way. Faith recognises that God can be trusted, for he is faithful, and he always keeps his word.
