A Need to Be Willingly Unfashionable
Updated: Jul 14, 2019
As Christians in the second decade of the twenty-first century, we need to willingly be unfashionable in our engagement of the prevailing culture and its numerous idols. That does not mean that we reject everything, but it does mean never accept anything uncritically. It means that we are to walk the narrow path between the absolutes of the fundamentalists on the one hand, and the secular cultural-materialists on the other. Authentic Christianity will only survive and thrive by absorbing the blows levelled at it by both these entities. It must steer a course between the philosophical trends and political issues of the day by continually critiquing both in the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. So, we must hold lightly to the status quo and be intrinsically wary of all worldly powers while subversively toiling for a more just world characterised by the kingdom and reign of God.
