The Decline of Christianity in Australia

Updated: Jun 29, 2020

Christianity is in serious decline in Australia, and the impact of this decline influences not only the church but also the whole of society. Consequently, there is a lack of purpose and meaning beyond the individual’s sense of unlimited freedom. This, in turn, perpetuates a growing dullness and uncertainty that often has deadly consequences for the wellbeing of both the individual and the whole of society. The fact is that human identity is wedded to a sense of transcendence for so long that once you remove God from the picture everything else becomes unglued and misdirected. The forming of human beings takes place within a culture, and when that culture becomes disconnected from God, the kind of human beings formed will be fundamentally different. Likewise, without God, the public square becomes vacant and empty, and eventually, filled with anything and everything creating an unceasing sense of instability. However, God cannot and will not be entirely banished from the individual or public consciousness even when large sections of the society substantially ignore him. There will always be a remnant that faithfully follows the God and Father of the crucified one keeping the rumours of God alive within society.
