No Mission at All

Updated: Jun 14, 2019

Why is it that we, as the people of God, don’t embrace God’s Mission? One of the reasons is that we are so focused on our own mission and doing mission our way that we don’t have time for God’s mission. Moreover, we wish to be in control and enjoy calling the shots. We want to decide what is the best way of doing mission and what is meaningful and worthwhile in terms of mission that we are threatened by the possibility of engaging in mission God’s way. We desire to be in control of our own lives and to order them as we see fit. So, far too often we pursue mission in the same way we pursue entertainment for our own pleasure, comfort, and self-satisfaction. At other times, it is our desire for security and wealth that gets in the way of allowing God to take control of our lives and our missional aspirations. But, God is God and we are weak and fallible human beings, and if we pursue mission in our own way then it’s not God’s mission; in fact, it is not mission at all. Mission is mission only when it aligned with the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the Reign of God; otherwise, it is simply our mission and that’s no mission at all.
