The Importance of Discovering the Big Questions

Updated: Jan 12, 2020

Over the past twenty plus years, I have recognised the need as a teacher of Mission Studies to continue reminding students that my role is not to supply them with answers but to help them discover the right questions. Thus, the compulsion to dig deeper and to continue learning comes from discovering the right questions. Some questions take us on a journey of a few months or a few years, but the really big questions take us on a journey of ten, twenty, thirty years or even a lifetime. The reason for this is the big questions; the really exciting questions always lead to more questions and to the complexity encapsulated in the question itself. Thus, in pursuing the really big questions we become lifelong learners. Surely that is what education longings to produce.
